If you’re running both Hubbub and Yoast SEO, you might wonder which plugin actually controls the title, description, and image that show up when your posts get shared on Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and other social networks. Here’s how the two work together.
When both plugins are active, only Hubbub outputs the Open Graph (OG) and Twitter meta tags on your pages. Hubbub automatically suppresses Yoast’s OG/Twitter tags so you don’t end up with two competing sets fighting for the same spot. Hubbub then fills in those tags using this order of priority:
- What you entered in Hubbub — the “Hubbub: Share Options” fields on the post. Used first, if filled in.
- What you entered in Yoast — Yoast’s social/SEO fields. Used as a fallback when the matching Hubbub field is empty.
- Your post’s defaults — the post title, excerpt/description, and featured image. Used when neither Hubbub nor Yoast has a value.
This is decided field by field, not all-or-nothing. For example, you can leave the Hubbub title blank so it falls back to whatever’s in Yoast, while still setting a custom Hubbub social media image.
Which value gets used? #
- Filled in Yoast only? Yoast’s value is used.
- Filled in Hubbub only? Hubbub’s value is used.
- Filled in both? Hubbub wins.
- Filled in neither? Your post’s title, excerpt/description, and featured image are used.
If you’d rather Yoast handle it #
Maybe you manage social titles in Yoast for Google Discover, or you just want one plugin in charge of your meta tags. Either way, you can turn Hubbub’s tags off:
Go to Hubbub → Settings and enable “Disable Open Graph Meta Tags.”
With that setting on, Hubbub stops outputting OG/Twitter tags entirely, and Yoast’s tags take over as normal. You don’t have to give up Hubbub’s share buttons, Pinterest tools, or anything else — this setting only affects the meta tags.
Still seeing the wrong title or image on social media? #
Even when your tags are set correctly, this is usually a caching issue on the social network’s side, not a Hubbub or Yoast problem. If you’ve recently changed a title, description, or image:
- Re-scrape the URL with the platform’s debugger such as Facebook’s Sharing Debugger (“Scrape Again”).
- Make sure only one plugin is outputting OG tags. The cleanest setup is letting Hubbub handle it (the default) or enabling “Disable Open Graph Meta Tags” and letting your SEO plugin handle it — not both at once.
What about Hubbub Lite? #
This Hubbub-over-Yoast priority applies to Hubbub Pro, which is what adds the custom Social Media (Open Graph) Title, Description, and Image fields. Hubbub Lite doesn’t have its own share fields, so on Lite, values fall back to Yoast (if set) and then to your post defaults.
